How Long to Isolate Breeding Hens - 03/13/15 04:11 PM

In preparations to hatch Isbar this spring we just isolated our breeding hens from a mixed flock. How long should we wait until their reproductive tract is clear before adding the Isbar rooster and collecting eggs to set?

I've heard that 2-3 weeks is the time that should be given.

Best of luck with your breeding program!

hens can store semen for a while, so best to err on the side of caution and give them at least three weeks.
What I do with those early eggs that may be fertile, is break them open to check fertility and then use the perfectly good eggs in quiches or other egg recipes. It's a good way to test whether roosters are up to fertilizing, as in early spring their fertility can be down.
