This is not my chick, but rather belongs to a member of BYC.Do you think this chick is salvageable? If she is, how do you go about treating this? I advised her to clean it a bit better and possibly cull her. I also advised her to separate the remaining chicks from the keets.

The only treatment for this is to build a new beak from either carbon fibour or what I would use is Devcon ,this is a a titanium putty and sets fantastically hard Can even be used to to resurface bearing housings ...here is a link if you decide not to cull.......http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDAQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.devcon.com%2Fproducts%2Fproducts.cfm%3Ffamilyid%3D124&ei=TTEzUoDgE4iyiQezkYGwBg&usg=AFQjCNHdfyedszFt6tWbnA73N6t9TAjeKA&sig2=YBOsnYH_I7mj48CpIOvu6Q

If it is not damaged too far down, like a fingernail, it will grow back to a useable beak. Feeding in the meantime might be difficult, if the chick cannot eat as it is now. But hunger drives us all! Separate, of course, but if it can see the other chicks, it will have a better attitude toward healing.

I had a slightly older chick break off half of the top beak (soft "quick" was exposed), and it grew back perfectly. Good luck to your friend and the chick! CJR

CJR did you see the pic? the general consensus of veterinarian science is that a bird that looses more than 20% of beak length at natal stage will not recover and will need prosthetic help of course there is natural selection and perhaps your bird was one one of these? But on a larger scale recovery is nigh impossible due to dead cells ,this is some what reflected in Conway's Game of Life found here .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life ,while I am not a student of calculus per say,I think this may have relevance?

I'm not sure what happened to the chick. It belonged to a random member on another forum and I have not noticed an update. thank you for the information.
