I have started hatching what appears to be mottled birds from my duckwing pen. I have not seen this before. I only really noticed it because I have 1 mottled roo I bought from Ann Charles and I paid close attention to its color changes as it grows.

These chicks are showing motteling. I am wondering if it is going to stay or if they only have one copy does it disappear. I may have to start a motteled project. I love my roo chick I have.

Are these "spangles" on the tips of the chicks first feathers?

If so that is normal for duckwing chicks, the second set of feathers will look more like duckwings.

If you go to the thread on motteling I posted some photos on page 11 or 12. Take a look and let me know. The chicks appear to be birchen, not duckwing that is whats throwing me. Their chick down was the typical penguin look then black feathers started coming in with some white primaries, then random white feather tips are popping up.

I can't really tell anything from the photo because it taken from the front. All I can say for sure is that it looks like it is on either Birchen Gene(ER)or extended black (E).

I'm going to e-mail you some old pictures I have that show mottling on first feathers and also some recessive white chick down. These pictures are in old word documents that wouldn't come up as images on the ACA web site.

The chicks father is E/ER I believe because he is out of a birchen roo and a black hen. I got your email thank you. I love the link for the genetic info. I have started reading it.

It is like a light bulb on a dimmer is slowing being turned on. I can't wait untill it is bright enough to see. LOL!

I got my first pure wheaten chicks out of my BBR Pen this weekend. YIPEE! I have been assuming that my Rooster and Hen are at least split for wheaten and wild type and this weekend was proof for me.

So far 99% of the chicks from my bbr pen are wheaten and I am getting 50% tufted, so here is hoping they are not all roos.

I have figured out that my mottleds are coming originally from a duckwing hen I purchased from Ann Horsman. I bred her to my birchen roo and then kept a roo from them and am breeding it back to her. I am getting mostly birchen mottleds from them. I originally thought he was from a black hen but went back and looked at my notes and he is out of my duckwing hen. I had sold the roo I had kept out of the black hen. So now I have several nicely mottled roos and a mottled tufted hen. I havn't decided if I am going to continue with this project or not.
