My rooster has long spurs and I am worried that he will hurt the hens when he mounts them. I have had to use chicken saddles for them because he has rubbed their backs bare. I haven't seen any blood where he has cut them yet but wonder what will happen when spring comes and he is more active.
Any thoughts??

Dog tonail clippers? Just nip the sharp points off,and if you can see the quick, like tonails, clip as short as you can without bleeding. They can be removed entirely, several methods. I have never done it==they grow back.

You can also use a mototool, such as a dremel, and use the rasp or stone to trim back and smooth off. Needs to be a two person job so you can hold and the other file or visa versa

Curious, how many hens do you have?

I've also seen people remove them whole with pliers and a pretty simple twist.
