I had a young bird die yesterday and had it in me to pull off my first necropsy. I don't quite know what I'm looking for though the dark sections on the intestines leave me puzzled. Pictures and more details here: http://avalonfarmsvt.com/marans-necropsy-101714/

I can't find the link now, but one of the Universities had a good page on this. Here are a couple links that may help.

Altair, the substance in the last photo you posted, looks a lot like cecal matter. Did you by any chance nick the ceca when you opened the bird up?

There are some quite good diagrams of hen intestines to be seen if you google <necropsy of hen>. A lot of these pictures come from from backyard chicken

I wasn't aware I ruptured the ceca. At first I thought the dark parts were feathers that had been cut and were sticking to it, but I sprayed it with water and it was some sort of tissue sloughing off.
