I have the opportunity to acquire some Hungarian Yellow chickens. These, being the Canadian birds, all descend from one flock and I would be getting eggs from a smaller sub population. I will be (hopefully) getting 4 dozen eggs, but they would be shipped from far away and the usual rule of thumb is to expect 25% hatch- so I'd probably be starting out with around 12 individuals at most. The opportunity to add new "blood" is limited. Does anyone have any advice regarding the best breeding strategy to ensure a healthy, thriving flock? I do have a copy of the Hungarian Standard and Lamon's Mating and Breeding of Poultry but that's it and my experience breeding and selecting chickens is (extremely) limited. Thanks.

Is there anyone out there in Europe (or other than Canada) who has experience with this breed? Any thoughts? Including Run away, it's a trap?

Thanks Berend. I will have to look into the breeding methods used in Hungary as it seems to be successful at maintaining diversity.
