Just a question. Has anyone ever test mated these to ascertain their genetic make up? Are they a variant of mottled black or some kind of 'paint' or something different?

I have. They are not some kind of paint. They are a variant of mottled black, with possible modifying genes? or slightly different allele?. The exchequers I had from UK were hatching the same as Ancona chicks.

Clive Carefoot did the same with Exchequer and found them to be a sort of mottled.
