I have a strange query. I don't think it's anything to worry about but:-
One of our chickens has always, for years, pecked and eaten, I think, wood. She has pecked, almost right through, one fence planc. Now she has started on a perch in the run. I think the other one is joining in. Does anyone have any ideas as to why? Have you come across this before? Like I mentioned, she's been doing this for years with no adverse effects but it would be good to know why.

We do not often think of animals having odd habits but all species DO. Horses will "crib". Cats will eat yarn or wool bits. Dogs have a variety of odd habits--can't break them of them. If she has been doing this for so long, providing a substitute would doubtless not change her pleasure of wood in a special place. Maybe it started with something delightfully edible on those spots--at some time? If she has no problems, not to worry!!! But it IS interesting!
