New April journal paper. The research entailed both test breeding and DNA sequencing of autosomal barred Fayoumi fowl (crossed with e+ Brown Leghorns). Some very surprising results.

"The feather pattern autosomal barring in chicken is strongly associated with
segregation at the MC1R locus"
Doreen Schwochow et al.
Pigment Cell Melanoma Res. 2021
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33793042/
* Supplemental files have additional colour plates of test breeding segregates (these need to be downloaded individually)

Although the Fayoumi fowl used in test breeding were homozygous for Db/Db, in test breeding results they found some autosomal barred phenotyped segregates were db+/db+ (DNA tested). From this they determined that Db is not needed in producing the autosomal barred pattern, but may have been selected to enhance the pattern quality.

There was at least one other eumelanin restrictor segregating (incl.uding without autosomal barred phenotype).

They didn't notice a linkage of Db with autosomal barring pattern, ie no evidence of Pg-Db linkage. They didn't find DNA sequencing evidence of the Pg gene (including with DNA testing other patterned breeds, eg laced Sebrights, Partridge Rocks, etc).

To be clear. They did find Pg in sebrights, partridge rocks?

Henk, they didn't find a candidate gene for Pg in these Fayoumi. They have Db sequenced, but haven't found Pg or Ml nearby yet. I think they might have tried in the Blue Bl and mo study as well, ie for Pg.

Thought I'd link to this old thread on early phenotypes of imported Fayoumi line used in research. Two phenotypes were segregating, silver autosomal barred with dark shanks and black-tailed silver with light shanks.
