my hen just layed an egg without a shell. she has been acting a bit listless for the past few days and today I noticed that her vent was very exposed(I'd never seen any of my hen's vents exposed before). Then she dropped out an egg without a shell. Is this something to be concerned about?

I believe she has been laying soft shelled eggs off and on and some of her eggs were a bit ill formed at the top. None of my other hens have any similar problems.

What could be the cause of this and what can I do to help her?

she needs to be watcheed.
if you find her walking funny (chest high) or hunched up- she has a sandpaper egg
this is halfway inbetween a soft and regular egg- needs a heat lamp and possible help in delivery.

My hens just started laying again since the fall molt and the short winter hours. One of them layed three no shells and then good eggs ever since. Since your other hens have good eggs I doubt it is a nutricianal problem. It may work itself out in time. Keep an eye on that vent. If it remains exposed the other are sure to peck at it and you will need to isolate her.
