Our young chickens are currently being kept in our garage, and each evening around 6:00 pm we shut off the light to let them go to bed. However, on some nights they get spooked and all cram to one end of their cage. We're not sure why they do it some nights, and why they don't other nights. We're afraid they'll crush each other. Is there anything I can do to remedy the problem?

Is it possible that on those night's that this happens the temp is cooler. You did not say how old they are but, I know they tend to huddle together for warmth. I don't know if its true (although my grandpa had over 300 chickens and my mom grew up there) or not but, my mom said that you do have to be careful as they could smother each other when piling on top of each other. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? cool

The best way to prevent this is to leave a small light on. I had birds that did this & ended up loosing a few (all Pullets, no Males). It was suggested to me & I tried it, it worked like a charm.

Light for warmth or in case they are afraid of the dark LOL? Really I would like to know as I am planning to hatch chicks at some point. Thanks

On the nights they do it we've been turning on a heat lamp and that calms them down. It seems to happen when they get spooked by something, or if we turn to light off too late and it gets dark too fast. I'm just worried when it comes for them to go out to their coop that they'll hurt each other if they get scared.

From your most recent post, it sounds like they were cold and not frightened. Not sure about how to keep them warm in the coop though. You may need to keep them in the garage until they are old enough. You did not say how old they are though and that would help. Good luck laugh

They're about two and a half months old. We're not planning to put them out just yet though.

When they pile they all began to chirp very loudly and mass together in one corner. They've done it on nights where there has been a thunderstorm, which is why I think they're scared and not cold.
