While my daughter was petting and preening our orpington she noticed a large pea size bump on her neck.. We left it for a couple of days not knowing what it was until she looked again and the bump was going black .. We took a cocktail stick and gave it a gentle pock and it was obviously a feather ingrowing there .. She managed to pull the feather out of the skin completely and she seems fine although the feather looks a little mutated! My question is this .. if we hadnt had noticed the bump would the feather have sorted itself out or would it have got infected ? An orpington has an awful lot of plumage and checking her over would be a nightmare !

Not to worry. This happens from time to time. I wont say it can't happen but I have never seen one get infected.
