One of my silkies has loose white flaky skin all over its body, could this be caused by mites?

Daniel it might be the feather shaft, I'm not sure of the correct name for it but if you look at the base of each feather you will see a white hard covering. Has your bird molted lately. I'v had trouble with this shaft growing out with the feather and having to run my finger nail up the feather to let the feather fluff out.
To check for mites take the bird in strong light and tip her head down with her back against your chest look at the vent and base of tail. There are 4 kinds of mites that chickens get Northern Fowl Mite, Red Mite, Scaly Leg and Depluming Mite. There are many good products on the market if you find any crawly critters. You don't say but do your birds have a dust bath area, this is helpful for them to rid themselves of skin problems. I hope this helps, I have 3 Silkies I keep for hatching and they have to be the clowns of chickendom.
