#20667 - 06/11/06 05:35 PM Fireplace ashes for mites?

It was recently suggested to me to put a box of (obviously cold) ashes from my fireplace into the run and the chickens will dust themselves in it. They said this was another mite preventative.

OK, the ashes are acidic, so I guess it makes sense. Has anyone else ever heard of this or tried it?

A box of sand or sandy loam soil is just as good, and will not soil the feathers as badly. But wet, none are very useful! CJR
