Guys, from my observations, eb can be quite easily bred into and out of Black Orpingtons, for example - it is even possible to quite easily select for the pattern gene. However, from analysing my chicks, it's clear that eb can carry all sorts of subtle melanizers / restrictor genes - they're not as bold as Ml or Db, but you can see subtle factors at work.

I would go with Dr Carefoot's opinion that the less black in an eb line, together with homozygous Pattern gene - the better chance of more refined pencilling.
