I have 18 hens, about 3 of which have become broody and raised chicks (store-bought) in the past. One has raised 3 clutches. Great mama. But she's about 5 years old this year. And if I remember correctly, she wasn't one of the ones to go broody last year.
I want to raise more chicks this spring. I usually keep a flock of about 25-35 hens. I just culled my oldest hens this past fall. (I kept that one 5 year old.) I do not want to raise chicks myself with a heat lamp. It's SOOOO much easier (and fun!) for a mama hen to do it. How old has your oldest broody hen been?
