Good morning,
Does anyone know what is the maximum hen to rooster ratio for Pharoah Quail? I do want good fertility but also want as many together as possible.
Thanks,
Ed

We used 2 males to 20 females in our pens.

What fertility do you get from Coturnix quail at that ratio. The paper that I remember seeing was that fertility dropped off if you exceeded two females per male in colony breeding. This study had a lot of birds in a pen. Do you mate two males and 20 females in separate pens?

I've started with a limited number of birds so my inbreeding is probably pretty high, but I only get around 50% hatch at a ratio of 2 females to each male for two lines that I maintain. They are color variants that aren't fixed and I usually cull pretty heavily on the males, but I try and maintain a 2:1 ratio.

We got around 70% but we had an outbred colony with birds from A&M and UGA and a line with unpigmented eggs (maybe from PennState) which we crossed. It was about 24 years ago so don't have any of the records. I remember that we had best results brooding them in groups of less than 20 and used peanut butter jar lids and coarse granite hen grit to keep those little buggers from drowning the first few days. we used popsicle sticks under a 6 ounce glass to make the waterers we used for the first 3 or 4 days. After that we had very little drowning or other problems. We brooded them in little cages about 12 d x 16 w x 12 h.

Last night I called one of the fellows I worked with on the heavy metal-DDT toxicity project using Coturnix Quail. He recalls that we used FIVE (5) males to 20 females so that is a 1 male: 4 female ratio which is a far cry from what I "remembered!" Since he had some of the records and was able to refer to them.....I think that my recollection is probably totally inaccurate.

Only know about chickens, but the recommended ratio for is about eight to twelve hens to one rooster.
Hope this helps laugh
