Tucson, Just as an aside, if you are keeping ducks then the group terminology is a "brace". However if you are keeping Mallards then you have a "Sord". Great trivia question eh.

This started as an activity I was doing in class with my 6th graders (I am a middle school teacher). We were creating Venn diagrams (the ones with the two overlapping circles) and choose to compare chickens and ducks. Boy, I knew chickens but not much about ducks. Thanks for the info guys.

Its funny, when speaking of them as a whole we refer to them as ducks, yet only the females are ducks and the males are drakes; the same for geese, the female is the goose and the male is the gander. a dog is a male and a bitch is the female. A filly is a girl and a colt is a boy. Its no wonder our language is becoming so mutilated!
Is there a difference between duckling and ducklette?

Well, actually, both terms are correct according to "The Animal Nomenclature and Terminology" reference page found by searching the web on duck terminology. This is the insert I brought back with me:
this is the catagories for all animals described:
1. species (lat.)
2.catagory name/ english
3.male
4.female
5.juvenile
6. " in another language
7. " " " "
8.castrate

____Ducks:__________________
1. Anas platyrhynchos
2. duck
3. drake
4. hen, duck
5. duckling
6.N/A
7.N/A
8. capon

and it was so funny that a male donkey is an ass even on this worldwide chart!!
