I would like to create some income via chicken egg ornaments from my Aracuanas (I live in a city and they would actually sell!). Any web sites with helpful hints?? Thanks.

Here is a good site that gives you step-by-step instructions. smile http://www.geocities.com/kraftproject/craft-successful-blown-eggs.html

You can also do it only making one hole in the bottom of the egg, with the same basic instructions given on the site. Hope that helps.

I was thinking the vary small thing. not selling them but wondering how people do that. but wouldn't the egg shell get dried out and crumble easy? I was just wondering.

I think they do it by baking the egg shells at 200 degrees for a certain amount of time, It apparently hardens them, I personally haven't done it though, just read about it.

Rachel, I read that you can varnish them. I haven't found anything on baking them yet. I'll let you know how they turn out.

okay, thanks. you would think that baking them would 'make' them crumble and dry. just like when you have a egg shell out in the sun. confused weird.

Heres the good site that tells you how to blow an egg just poking one hole iin it, and why baking helps.

One of the easiest ways to accomplish this task is to use a dremel with a little swirrly bit to drill 2 holes in top/bottom of the egg. Then cut the end off an old piece of garden hose and turn the faucet on just slightly. Water will "blow" the contents of the egg out much better than your lungs and will also rinse out the contents. Let the eggs dry for a week or so in a warm room and they will be ready to paint or whatever. I have used this method for about 20 years.

A friend of mine from Wisconsin sent me a dark egg from his Welsummers. I wanted to save the shell, so I made a small hole in the large end of the egg, inserted a small syringe, and sucked out the contents. Then I filled the egg with warm water several times, shook it gently, and drained. Using this method, there is only one small hole in the shell rather than two. If you wanted a smaller hole, I suppose you could carefully insert a large hyperdermic needle into the shell (the kind like you give shots to cattle) and suck out the contents.
