I am a newbie to the chicken world, having inherited my neighbor's flock when he moved away. I have 6 hens (orpingtons, australorps, americaunas) and 2 roosters...a Hamburgh and Americauna. I have had these birds almost a month and I have noticed the Hamburgh is behaving like a hen. Whenever one of the hens goes in to the coop to lay, as she is browsing the nest boxes to choose, the rooster quickly picks a box and climbs in and "feathers his nest"! He spins around getting in just the right position and pulls straw underneath him, then he settles down and cackles like crazy!. This goes on everyday, one day I was convinced he would leave me an egg! Now, the other rooster is starting to do it too. Since I am new to The-Coop and to chickens, I don't know if this is 'normal'or common behavior. It certainly is hilarious! laugh

He wants the hen to lay in the nest he has chosen. He wants to be a Daddy. It's normal.

My roosters both do that, a silkie and a RIR. I think its the roosters way of saying "hey check out this nest, you could hatch me some kids here". I find it funny to watch them do it. They make perfect nests in unsettled areas. It is enough to convince you they just might be laying an egg if you just got into chickens.
