Hello all. I incubated and hatched 8 barred Plymouth Rock chicks. Two of them seem normal to me with good reddish combs and waddle growth; the others all seem to have very small combs and practically no waddles and are all darker in color. Is this a sign of an infertile chicken? Is there such a thing as a pullet that just never is fertile and the signs include little or no waddles and combs? Thanks, Warren

My guess is that the light coloured ones with red combs and wattles are males, and the other 8 are perfectly normal females. Female barred rocks are (almost) always darker in colour than the males, and their combs and wattles won't turn red until they hit puberty and are close to laying - which may be 5-6 months.

Thanks for your advise, so do cockrels generaly grow combs and wattles way before pullets of the same age? Its not the color I'm worried about its the complete absence of combs and wattles on the darker colored ones, also I have one RIR thats 10 weeks old that I was hoping was a pullet ,do RIR hens ever have greenish tail feathers this one does and has a nice wattles and comb allready too, do you think its a rooster.
thanks

Can you post a picture? Some pullets have green tail feathers, but not usually RIRs; it certainly sounds roosterish. In my experience, yes, cockerels' combs and wattles develop way before pullets'. They are both present in the young pullet, but small and pale.

Warren, read the following thread. Perhaps it will help with posting photos.

http://www.the-coop.org/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=000020

Your photos have to be uploaded from your computer to an online photo album, such as PhotoBucket, and the online photo album cannot be password protected. Be sure the photos are not too large. If so, they will be changed to links.

The lighter colored barred rock and the red are cockerels. Sorry.

The good news is that the other two look like perfectly normal pullets.
