I am new to turkeys and I really like them. Sexing them is another matter - I have found this to be difficult. All of my Bourbon Reds looked pretty much alike until maybe a week ago. Suddenly at 12 weeks I have noticed some major changes. I sent the photo below to the breeder of my birds and she confirms that the two shots of a 'Tom?' are definitely a Tom and the other picture is a hen, as I thought. Does anyone know of a way to sex turkey poults earlier than 12 weeks?

top one is a tom. The other two are hens.

Full body shot could be a late developing tom but I don't really think so.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your input, and you just illustrated my point on the frustration of sexing turkeys. smile

Both birds that are marked 'Tom?' are the same bird, one picture a full body shot and the second a head shot. The pictures were taken just a minute or so apart. I think you can see why I would be confused?

What breed do you raise? By what age SHOULD I be able to sex my Bourbon Reds ?

A C
