I am new to this forum so I will give you a little background. My family runs Rice Creek Hunting and Recreation in central Minnesota. In the spring of the year we hunt wild turkeys, primarily Toms and Jakes so I would like to learn how to sex my chicks at day old. Does anyone know a good way to sex day old wild turkey chicks.

You would need to vent sex to be accurate, but quite often you can tell by studying the snood on newly hatched birds. Toms are said to have bead shaped snoods, hens to have a triangular shape. I can tell the most prominate ones are toms, and the smallest ones are hens, but the birds that fall in between I'm usually doing a guessing game on. Other than that you have to wait until they are about 6 weeks and the toms start shooting the red.

Thank you Jennifer. I had about 600 chicks hatch yesterday, hopefully I can get around to sexing them tomorrow .

i would use the head and eye form as per peacocks chicks.
they are much the same and the heads are good and bony- more than chicks.
not 100 % but in a batch of chicks taht big- the heads are the most 'visible' part of the flock
