Can anyone tell me why some of my Bantam egg yolks have a rotten smell? The chickens are healthy, and I have even had chicks hatch from bantam eggs. My mom seems to think that is something that they are eating-they have free run of the yard. Thank you for any help.

I am a very old person and have had chickens all my life and I have never had a fresh egg smell or taste "rotten" or even "off".

Every once in a while someone posts about the problem, but so far I have never had anything that my "housed" or a "free range" bird eats, affect the eggs.

It is strange to me, and I have no answer, except to suggest that you pen your hens, feed commercial feed only and see if the problem is solved. If not, there is something wrong with the hen?????? If that fixes it, then it is something in your range. You will have to be the sleuth. CJR

Oh, just occurred to me that something like an oily rag or ?? in the nest box where she lays may hold the clue???
