At what age can you tell weather a silkie is male or female. I have one silkie chick and it is three weeks old, and i want to know when i can tell what sex it is.

YoYO, If you have high quality Silkies, the females topknot will be round and full from hatch. The male's is less so, and actually may not be much at all until the trailer feathers, which grow long in back and not high in front, begin to grow. Again, the best Silkies will show a small comb on the males very early, the females almost none for a while. Male may show vulture hocks with first growth of leg feathers when very small, the females legs shorter and straighter. By 6 weeks there should be no questions about sex of Silkies. CJR

It isnt silly if you dont know. The topknot or crest, is a knob of feathers which grow on top of the head many times from an actual bony or fleshy growth. The comb, which can be of several types such as rose or straight, are a red, fleshy growth on the head. Chickens also have wattles and earlobes which hang from the head. Different breeds have different styles and sizes.
