How warm for my broody and her babies?

The Classroom @ The Coop: Incubation/Raising Chicks: How warm for my broody and her babies?

If you haven't read my other messages: I have a broody hen sitting on eggs and they are due to hatch next Wednesday. Keep in mind my broody girl got really sick and dehydrated and although she is doing well now, I consider her to be "recovering".

The weather has been unusually warm but we are turning back to a normal spring as of this weekend. We will have nights in the 40's, maybe even as low as 40. Daytime temps will be in the upper 60's.

She is separated and in her own little 2' x 4' coop with a small pen. I can close her in and there is a light fixture inside the coop so I can warm it up in there if need be.

I know momma will keep the babies warm but I'm wondering, with the upcoming temps for the next week or so, should I keep it a little warmer inside her coop? If so, what do you think would be an optimal temperature for her while setting and for her and chicks next week?

Thanks!
Susie

Susie, She should be just fine with temps you mention. The babies don't come out much for several days, as they are tired from hatching and don't eat much for several days, so don't worry if you don't see them out from under the hen all day! With her dedication to her eggs, expect she will be a good mother and hover the babies as much as they need it. It is always such a neat experience when they hatch'!! CJR

Thanks again! I'm so excited. This is really fun. I promise I will try not to freak out if I don't see the babies running around and eating right away. LOL! ;-)

Couldn't do this without you! You're a household name around her at the moment!
