I have now 12 out of 16 eggs hatched. Seven have progressed to the brooder. Should I be feeding them more than the chick food I bought at my local farm supply store? They seem to be doing fine with it, but I read somewhere to feed them "mush". What is "mush"?
Anonynmous, The chick Starter is all they need, unless a problem appears, along with clean water. CJR
I am not sure what mush is, but maybe they meant to say mushed. Chicks can not eat the pellets so their feed is crushed so that they can eat. They do not need anything else, when they are about three weeks of age, you can offer them some bread for a treat or go and catch some bugs for them to eat... Good luck and enjoy them.
they probably meant 'mash'? which is the powder-like form of chick starter.
How often should we be feeding chicks? We have 2 baby chicks that our children brought home from school.
Kathy,
Kathy, They should have Chick Starter before them all the time, to eat whenever they want to! Even if they scatter and waste some. And same with water--. Two is going to fun! (this week, I have 14 new chicks in a box in the bedroom!) And the 14 have joined 12 from the previous week--in two more boxes of 6 each, still in the bedroom! They are eating LOTS! CJR

Your chicks should have access to feed at all times. They will eat as they need to.
