I was wondering how much feed is required for each duck per day. They are three months old now, and when they were under 8 weeks I always kept their feed bowl full. Now I only feed them twice a day but I am worried that they are not getting enough. None of them are loosing weight, but everytime they see me they start quacking and running towards me. There is an even dozen (although I bought 18). I had ducks last year, but they never seemed to be hungry (I know poultry and water fowl can eat a lot of food and are usually always hungry, but i want to make sure that they are getting enough. I throw corn out there for them, and it usually disappears, but I say the goats get a little of that as well.
With young ducks we pretty much feed all they will clean up, and make them clean it up before they get more. No creature has a better appetite than young ducks, so they have learned that your appearance often means food. We have seven mature Pekins, and I put about 1 1/2 gallons of mixed barley and duck grower pellets in their hopper feeder about every third day or so, whenever they have cleaned up the last feed. They prefer the pellets, so they will go through the barley looking for them, then clean up the barley when they get hungry. They also are beginning to get some grass, and muddle in the pond much of the day now, too. This has reduced their need for prepared feed. When your ducks become mature, their calorie intake will level off and they will not be eating everything in sight 24/7.
Any advice would be nice.
