White Leghorns laying brown eggs

Hi,

I have two white leghorns (amongst my other twelve chickens of various breeds). I thought White Leghorns were supposed to lay white eggs, but it appears that they're laying brown eggs. I've seen them in the nesting boxes and when they leave and I retrieve the eggs they're light brown. They just started laying a week ago....is this normal...will they eventually start laying white eggs?

Howdy

It could be you may not have white leghorns.

#1 you may have "Austra-whites" which are a white leghorn / australorp cross. They are white with a few black flecks, and lay a tinted, not pure white egg.

or

#2 you may have a "White Rock" which lays brown eggs.

Have fun with them!!
