Are there any breeds of chickens that are more broody and are better mothers than others? I am interested in standard sized breeds. I would like to hear your personal experiences. Any advise on broody hens would be appreciated.
Ang,
Bantams are good setters. I have heard that the Silkies are especially good.

Large breeds that tend to be more broody are Australorps, Brahmas, Buckeyes, Chanteclers, Cochins, Javas, Langshans, Orpingtons, Sumatras, Sussex, and Wyandottes. Of these the Cochins are probly best known for it. The most famous broodies would probly be Silkies but they are classed as a bantam in this country. They are a medium sized bird. Larger breedes that some times brood would be Aseel, Dorkings, New Hampshires, Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, and Shamos. The other breeds rarely brood or tend to be unsuccessful. It is best to seperate a brooding hen from the rest of the flock. While she is setting on the eggs pick up the nest box with her in it and put her in a seperate pen. The nest box should be darkened and well ventilated. Leave food and water close to the nest box so she doesn't have to go far to get it. They can worry you to death thinking they are going to starve from not seeing them get off the eggs to eat or drink. When the eggs hatch you want to provide chick starter ration and water for the chicks. The hens layer ration must be high enough off the ground so that the chicks can't eat it as the large amount of calcium will damage the chick's kidneys. I only did it once and it worried me to death the whole time so I prefer to use a incubator and a brooder myself. It costs more but I have more peace of mind.
