silkie bantam cross????

The Classroom @ The Coop: Breed Discussions: silkie bantam cross????

Hi,
I have kept chickens (and ducks and geese) for a couple of years now. I
have golden sex links and rhode island reds, I origionally got them for
grasshopper control (they work great!), but I have come to really enjoy
them as pets. My friend has a small mixed flock. Her rooster is a black
silkie bantam. Her hens are araconas, and various bantams including a
white crested Polish, a silkie, and some cochins. She is willing to give me
some of the eggs to incubate. What would be the result of this? Is this a bad
idea? I have expirience breeding dogs, and us dog people get upset at
"back yard breeders" who cross-breed dogs, because they are destroying
the breed instead of advancing it. Does the same go for chickens. If I
decide to try this, the chickens hatched would just be kept as pets. What I'm
really curious about is what feather type of the chicks would be. Would it
be silkie or normal or somewhere in between? Also, what size would the
auracona (full sized) x silkie bantam be, what color eggs would they lay?
Any thoughts on this subject will be greatly appriciated. Thanks in
advance,
Chrissie

Hi I am in the same boat wondering the outcome. I recently had some crossed chicks to hatch and they are interesting colors. They are only a few days old and I am very curious to see how they turn out. They are a cross between a red cochin bantam hen and a black silkie rooster and a white silkie rooster. I have some buff colored chicks and some dark buff with a brown stripe down their back. They do have the foot of a silkie with the extra toe. It is my opinion that as long as they are raised as pet or sold as pets there would be no problem. Let us know what happens!

Hi
We had a Silkie Pheasant cross it turned out like a very odd coloured silkie. Friends of ours have a cross with mostly silkie feathers with a few very odd regular feathers thrown in. I think it depends on the dominant genes. As to the moral question that is up to each individual to decide if one rule applies to all things, perhaps this is the ideal time to see the issue from the other side.
The important issue is will they be cared for? and it sounds as if you will keep them yourself. If you do this I too, would like to Know what your results are.
Good luck
