can some tell me if barred rock chichens will be compatible with my white cochin bantams in size and temperment? Thanks...roger white
If they are BANTAM barred rocks they will be similar in size and temperament. Although, you can't get much sweeter than a cochin. However, standard Barred Plymouth Rocks are much larger. The hens are pretty laid back, but the roosters can be feisty. Check out this site for pics and more info on the various breeds:
If you want to keep barred rocks I advise you to keep them seperate. The hens become very large and the roosters get even bigger. If you want more info check out the Barred Plymouth Rock discussions

I was reading about the barred color and this reminded me of a situation that I have. I have a pen of standard Dominiques that I am hatching from this year. They appear to have good color and type, are excellent layers. The eggs are hatching well and the chicks are hardy and vigorous. However, I am getting some chicks that hatch out a really pretty silver color. These chicks have a wide black stripe down their backs and they have the white spot on their heads like the regular Dominique chicks. As these chicks mature, they grow the barred color only it is a lighter barring than the regular Dominiques. These chicks also have a good deal of white in the breast area. At first I thought that I had gotten some of my hatching eggs mixed up with my mixed flock of layers but now I'm sure that these chicks have hatched from my pen of Dominiques. These Dominiques were purchased last year form a private breeder and have never been exposed to any other breed. These off colored chicks seem to have the correct body type and comb of a purebred Dominique. Has anyone ever had this happen in a barred colored flock before? I'm confused.
