Cholestrol-free eggs

The Classroom @ The Coop: Breed Discussions: Cholestrol-free eggs

We are planning to start raising a small flock of chickens in northern Minnesota this year for eggs, and eventually meat. A friend of ours told us that there is a breed of chickens that lay cholestol-free eggs. I have heard of cholestrol-free eggs before, but thought it had more to do with diet than the breed. Does anyone out there know if this is fact or fiction?

Since we cannot test eggs ourselves, we rely on reports. Unfortunately, one cannot be sure about something as elusive as cholesterol in eggs. They have it, and even different eggs from a flock might test differently. If one tests lower, it will not be cholesterol-free, and the difference will not be significant in ones diet. Breeds of chickens cannot be relied upon to produce lower cholesterol eggs. Unless it is a critical situation, eat eggs sparingly and enjoy them. CJR

I have heard (of course I can't remember where, now) that eggs from hens who 'free-range' are significantly lower in cholesterol than those from 'battery' hens. Apparently it has to do with their diet and level of exercise (makes sense to me!). Could this be what your friend was referring to?

Some people say that Araucanas lay lower cholesterol eggs. This is a myth. As is said in the above message, the only thing that is a significant factor in an egg's cholesterol is the hen's environment.

OK... There is no such thing as a 'cholesterol-free'
egg!!!

Old wives tales talk of brown eggs having less
cholesterol, and green and blue eggs having even
less... That is just what they are- OLD WIVE'S
TALES.

All chicken eggs have roughly the same cholesterol
level as all other chicken eggs (with minor
insignificant variations)
