Adding GUINEAS to flock

The Classroom @ The Coop: Breed Discussions: Adding GUINEAS to flock

How do Guineas mix with "regular" chickens? We have Barred rock and golden sex link. I heard they are good guard chicks, and we have some snakes, mice etc. Is this true?

Guineas mix best with chickens they've been raised up with. They will eat the occasional small rodent or snake and if allowed to free range will do a good job of cleaning your property of all manner of insects, including ticks. Unlike chickens, guineas can be used in your gardens for insect control, too. Other than the occasional peck, they won't harm your vegetables and they don't scratch up your plantings like chickens will, either -- a good alternative to using insecticides on low growing plants. Lastly, guineas will sound the alarm when they sense danger. Here's the website of the Guinea Guru, Frit:

She has a guinea message board and loads of info on guinea fowl. If she cant' talk you into getting yourself some guineas, nobody can! Good luck.
