my poultry/waterfowl friend has "cape ducks". small like a wood duck in size but not as colorful. the male makes a strange noise like a kids toy, can't figure out how to type it!!, but for sure not a quack!!
Could you mean cape shelducks or cape teal?
We have two small ducks, one of which is a male and the other is a female. The male makes a funny noise unlike any drake that I have ever heard before. It sounds like a squeeky toy or a hickup. This drake is about 7" long and 6" tall. He is grey and white with a little black around the edges. The female on the other hand is even smaller, she is not quite buff but more of a carmel color with white. She seems to quack a lot and is able to lift herself off the ground by flapping her wings extremely fast. They both seem to walk the same way that our other duck (a Mallard )does, not upright like a runner. My question is does anyone know what kind of ducks these are?
i can't find them in the poultry standard
if u can, please email me so i don't miss your message
thanks

Cape teal are a bit smaller than a woody & are demure in appearance. Subtle shadings of grey, brown & black kind of spotted on the underside & the feathers are laced on the backs. They have bright pinkish bills.
Cape shelducks are larger than woodies & the sexes are different colors. The male has a grey head, tan brest & brown body whereas the female has a white head w/a little grey on the neck, & a brown breast & body.
Hope this helps.
