has anyone heard of a cross between a bantam rooster and buff orpington hen? our little rooster has been mating with our buffs and one layed one egg but, it was not fertile, the hen seems to be broody now though, any thoughts on this?.
Hi Roosty
Well, bantam is not a breed. It is a size. There are Bantam-sized buff orpingtons that are recognized by the APA and the ABA, so are showable. Crossing your banty rooster with your orpington will produce nothing but a crossbred. The chicks may be both bantam sized and standard sized if the roster carries the bantam "dwarfing" gene. If the rooslter is just small and does not carry the banty gene the chicks will be inbetween the size of the rosster and hen.

This is not really an answer but I couldn't resist sharing our story. Our male king pigeon developed a serious relationship with our Buff Orpington pullet. He spent many a fine afternoon straddling her neck trying to breed her.
When she would lay her egg he would rush about gathering sticks and building a nest around it. He would then set the egg albeit with a little difficulty.
Every day we would gather his egg and sweep out his sticks and every day he would do it again. He would also fend off the Buff Orpington cock and not allow any other bird in that house. The dilema was finally solved when we gave the king pigeon to a breeder several miles away. The Buff pullet did not seem to miss him, so I truly think it was a onesided affair.
