Advice needed on heavy breeds and their tolerance for hot weather. How do the heavier breeds generally fare in REALLY HOT weather? I know they're supposed to be practically immune to cold winter weather, so I'm wondering if conversely they do less well in the heat.
Newbiddy: My mom and dad raised these gigantic white chickens when I was young, and I can remember them (the chickens) lying around looking as though they might die at any minute (90-100F here in the summer). But they didn't. They were kept outside in the shade and were given perches (boxes, really) about 2 to 3 feet off the ground which gave them a little more of a breeze. Other than that, they were given cold fresh water twice a day. They seem to have brains the size of b.b's - so the more obvious and easily accessed their water is, the better. I'm not sure which breeds are better adapted to the heat - any Texans with success stories out there?
Do some of the heavy breeds do better than others in really hot weather? Which ones?
