Last November somebody abandoned a beautiful rooster at my house. According to my vet he was probably some sort of fighting game cock for illegal fights. We kept him as a pet. He was quite aggressive to adult cats and small dogs but not to people. His name was Chicken Bob. Bob adopted two small orange kittens and treated them like they were his chicks. He protected them fiercely. Recently a neighbor's dogs attacked Bob. He died the next day. The evidence at the scene of the crime suggests that Bob was protecting his kittens. Since the two dogs were known cat killers, the kittens probably would have been killed if the rooster hadn't stood and fought. By the way, the dogs are dead now. I cried for hours when Chicken Bob died despite our best efforts to save him. Everybody who met Bob loved him. He was so fun to watch, especially with his kittens. According to two university poultry departments, Bob was a rosecomb light brown leghorn or a cross of one. I have been trying desperately to find another like him. The owner of the dogs that killed him has agreed to pay for a new rooster and the shipping to get him here. Does anybody know where I can find one? I miss having him in the barn. All of my neighbors miss him too. The county fair is even going to have a Chicken Bob Memorial Award for the best rooster. My e-mail is horsejody@aol.com.
Have you found a replacement rooster yet? I have a young cockerol that I think is a brown leghorn but he doesn't have a rose comb that you are welcome to. Your story was a sad one and it will probably be impossible to find another rooster exactly like Chicken Bob but I hope you do.
Thanks,
Jody
