? on bard rock as laying hens

The Classroom @ The Coop: Plymouth Rocks - : ? on bard rock as laying hens
By Ronron on Monday, August 27, 2001 - 07:20 pm:

Recently bought home 8 bard rock pullets.Only 1 has started laying and very small eggs. Will Bard rocks give me a decent size egg and are they known to be good layers?
How wouldyou compare them to Rhode island reds with the size and quantity of eggs?
Thanks, Ron

Ronron, With good luck and management, your Barred Rocks should do just as well as RIReds. A lot depends upon the background of your birds--that is, did they come from good layer stock? First pullet eggs will be very small, but will be full size before very long. When they are all laying, feed a good quality Layer Ration and always clean water available. Oyster shell and Grit, and easy on any whole or cracked grains! Nice comfortable nests! You'll have it made! CJR

Sure they will start laying larger eggs as CJR mentioned and by now you already have seen! I have 2 barred rocks and both are laying extra large pearl pink colored eggs.
