I live in the Maryland suburbs and as far as I know there is just 1 feed store nearby and they won't be ordering chicks until Spring. I'd like to raise 3-4 backyard chickens, 2 barred rocks and 2 orpingtons, preferably pullets. Where can I find them at this time of year? When I try to order on line, there is almost always a 25chick minimum. I'd be willing to start with chicks, or even eggs, I'm just not sure how to get just 4 chickens, as opposed to 25. I'd be willing to drive to a hatchery if they will sell to me direct. I'll be driving through Richmond Virginia, N. and S. Carolina, Atlanta Georgia and Auburn Alabama between now and Christmas. Does anyone know of a hatchery on this route? Many thanks in advance
We had the same problem, we only wanted a few chickens but the shipping minimum is always 15 to 25. We ended up buying 5 Barred Rock from an Eggbay auction in the spring. Paid a little more but didnt care. I would have been willing to pay for 25 chicks to get only 6. We were a little worried about the shipping, but they traveled from Washington state to Massachusetts with no problem. All are happy and healthy now and fresh eggs every day. Raising chickens is a great experience and I hope you find a good source. There is not much on eggbay this time of year but should be plentiful come spring. www.eggbay.com
Branch creek poultry is in VA, not the chickens you are looking for but some beautiful rare breeds.
Thanks Mike. I'll look into eggbay. I've already checked branchcreek and you're right about the breeds.
