I found a chicken at the gas station a few miles from my house. There are no farms around the gas station but it's adajecent to the turnpike. I think the chicken fell out of a crate headed to the chicken factory. The chicken looks like photos of Barred Plymouth Rocks but he has feathers on his feet. He has black and white mixed feathers with a large red comb. The spurs have been cut off his feet. I don't know if he's been neutered. He didn't struggle when I picked him up so he must have been handled a bit. I'm trying to figure out what type of chicken he is. Can anyone help? I plan on keeping him as I always wanted chickens. I have 5 acres of land so he can roam quite a bit.
Could be a Barred Cochin. How big is he? How well feathered are his legs (down the shanks and /or on the toes)?
I'm guessing that he is a mutt. The barring gene often shows up in the next generation. So if his mother was barred, then he could be.
Pakers, you are probably right. I was hoping that maybe it was a diamond and not a lump of coal that was found.
I would guess he's about 12-16 inches tall. Looks like he might weigh about 10 pounds. He has quite a few feathers on his legs and toes. I don't mind if he's a mutt. <grin> I enjoy listening to him and he's fun to watch. He sounds more like an old car horn when he crows. LOL. Funny thing is he roosts on the rear axel of my truck.
You might have a Marans rooster, and if that's the case, then you found a treasure. This breed lays really really dark brown eggs, and the feathered feet ones are the most desired of them all. :))) Can we get a photo of it by any chance?
