This is my first post here, although I've been reading many of the discussions... Recently, our hens have become invested with lice.. We have been using DE, but feel we need something stronger.. Considering using Sevin or Adams Flea mist.. Just concerned how these will affect eggs and meat??? Does anyone know of any withdrawal period regarding Sevin or Adams????
I just knocked lice with sevin dust (5%). I don't know anybody who doesn't dump it all over their garden plants and then eat the veggies! (well, I don't use it normally, but most people do) So our theory is that it was no worse than that scenario. We washed our eggs thoroughly with soap and water for several days after each dusting. As far as meat goes, I'm sure nobody knows for sure. If you were going to butcher chickens, I would wait until they at least aren't dusty anymore and then I would think it's no worse than what we get on our vegetables, fruit or what we absorb when we use it ourselves.
We want to get the hens taken care of before we tackle the coop... Any help will be greatly appreciated by us and our hens.... thanks

It did an excellent job of ridding us of lice. Very fast too. We didn't see any more lice after the first dusting. We repeated the process a week later and haven't seen any sine. We DID, however, wear gloves and dust masks while doing it. And I'm not sure what you mean by "take care of the coop" but if it's only lice that you have, there is no need to dust the coop -- if that's what you meant. They ONLY live on the birds and die very quickly if they fall off the bird. It's not nearly as bad as coping with mites, or fleas in the case of dogs & cats.
