We have a Rhode Island Red that has developed a rather
Sounds like a kind of bumble foot. When my Cochin hen had bumble foot I took her to the vet. Her cut the lump open, squeezed and scraped it clean and gave me an Alu-spray to put on the wound untill it was healed. I also had to give her some antibiotic tablets for a couple of days. It healed very well.
anny, Right you were! We did a bunch of research on bumble foot and it was exactly what we had. Lucky for us our youngest son is in his first year of Vet. Tech. school and although his interest is in dogs and cats, he felt he could take care of it. We found notes on the internet that explained the procedure and it was a success. The hen was very cooperative and is now recouperating in a small pen on about six inches of clean shavings. The foot is well padded and bandaged. She dosen't seem to mind it and leaves it alone. If we can keep it from getting infected, we expect her to be back with the flock in a couple of weeks.
I also had a hen w/ a similar problem. She's had lumpy feet for a long time, and given that she was sooooo incredibly old, I thought maybe her age had something to do with it. Upon inspection of these strange lumps, it looked as though there were little keratinous stones or something of that nature wedged in little pockets of skin between her toes, on the "soles" of the feet, basically anywhere there was a skin fold. They didn't seem to bother her other than being a burden as far as normal walking was concerned. I pulled most of the "stones" out myself, but they would always manage to come back. It was very strange, they had a bad odor to them as well. From what I've read and heard about bumblefoot, I just get more confused as to whether this was or was not the case...My poor baby has since kicked the bucket and gone to poultry heaven, but I'm still curious as to what the heck these weird "things" were...
B&D, lucky you to have a son in Vet school, I wish him best of luck with his studies. If all goes well your hen should be back within a couple of days, they heal up ever so fast. Good luck. Anny.
Update on Bumbles. (Now her name)
Wish the patient good luck and patience. Anny.
Thank you Anny, She is doing great!
large lump between two of her toes and now it seems a second one has started on the same foot. She has begun to limp and keeps the foot of the ground most of the time. We checked to see if it was cut or had something in it but find nothing. The lump is quite hard.
Has anyone seen this? If so, What can we do to help her out?

If anyone has this problem, let us know. We will be glad to forward the information we found. Taking her to the Vet would have been the first choice but,,,,,,,,
our dogs are doing a good job of keeping them well fed. If you know what I mean. Thanks again for the help

The patient is doing great. She has started back laying and the wound is healing nicely. She will stay in a seperate pen for a couple of more weeks. That seems to be the only part of this whole thing she didn't agree with. Well, who likes being in the hospital anyway?
