Scaley Leg

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Health: Scaley Leg
By Anonymous on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 11:29 am:

Almost all of my birds have been incredibly infested w/ Scaley Leg Mites, some to the point where their toes had become disfigured and they had no scales left at all, and sadly I had to put them out of their misery because they couldn't even scratch around the coop happily anymore. I have tried every single remedy, from topical ointments from the drugstore, iodine and antibacterial washes combined with anything oily (as it is supposed to drown, or suffocate the mite no?) and I continue this every day, but to no avail! It seems that in the winter time it gets worse, and sort of becomes more mild in the summer when they are in the outside coop and on free range. Could this have something to do w/ them having access to scratching the the dirt and being in the sunlight, etc? If anyone has any more suggestions on what I can do, or if I'm going about this all wrong, please let me know!
thanks

If you run a Key Word search you will get lots of discussions on this subject.
IMHO the authority on the subject is Cjeanr. To save you time I have located a previous post by her:

Few people realize that Campho-Phenique (at your drug store) applied with an eyedropper, holding the leg up, and dripping the oil from toes to hock, just enough to soak under the scales--or soak the crust well, if the scales have been destroyed, you will have cure! Several applications about a week apart will do wonders with a bad case, one treatment for a very light infection. And if a mild case, the legs will be absolutely as good as new. But then you must watch for the telltale white lines around the scales on other birds or reinfection, C-P has a clean smell and does not stain the featherlegged breeds so badly as the heavier oils, and it will get under the scales, where the linseed, crankcase oils and other may push an air bubble behind and thus may not kill the mites. And it is not as irritating or painful for the birds. Used to get a huge bottle for $5, it is more costly now, for a very small bottle, but with an eyedropper, it is still a good value. Just watch you other birds legs, and if you see a hint of it, the CP will zap it in one treatment! I keep it on hand to put on legs of birds I ship or show! Good luck, CJR"

Ask for it at your Drug Store or find it at the Drug section at a Super Market. Bottles are small, green! Important to get treatment before it gets your birds! CJR

You can also order it on-line at medichest
but beware, it's the antiseptic liquid you need, NOT the gel. Hope this helps. Anny

I cured mine with vegetable oil. I applied it with a cotten ball, twice a day all the way up to where the leg meets the body. It took about 2 weeks but the crusts broke off and she is fine. She doesn't have access to the ground and she is my son's golden laced cochen and lives in a cage off the ground to keep her clean for showing.
