eggs without shells

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Health: eggs without shells
By Annefoley on Friday, May 3, 2002 - 02:54 pm:

We have a Buff Brahma hen which my daughter is planning
to show at 4H this summer. The hen has laid about a
dozen eggs without shells in the last few weeks after
coming off a winter brood. She appears to be in
excellent health otherwise and has been wormed
recently. Is this problem the result of some
infection, coming off brood or is it a calcium
deficiency? The hen is spoiled with black sunflower
seeds and may not be eating enough of her lay ration.
I am starting to get concerned and do not want to lose
my daughter's hen if possible. Does anyone have any
suggestions? P.S. Our other hens who live separately
lay eggs with excellent shells

It deffinately sounds like a deficiency of some kind.
Make sure they have crushed oyster shells, and start giving them bonemeal in their regular food.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try them right
away.
