I just acquired my second pair of peafowl. I put them in a confined area for a few days. On the third day, I noticed the male is limping badly on one leg. He will not put weight on the leg, and if he need to move, he hops on the other leg. I have examined the leg and it does not seem to be broken. Could this be a sprain? Any suggestions on what I can do for him?
Dear JoAnn,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. The peacock is still limping, but eating and drinking and looking otherwise very good. I checked his feet to see if he had any swelling in the bottom of the foot to rule out bumble foot, but it looks fine. I have him in a quiet, safe cage with room to exercies, so I guess I will just wait and see. Thanks for your reply.
Thanks in advance,
JoAnn

I have no experience with the peafowl, only chickens. I've have experienced 2 different hens with limping problems though. The first one was fairly young, maybe a few months old and I had been carrying all chickens around in a cat carrier to move to different locations. I think the leg got injured that way. Anyway she continued to limp and I carried her in my arms instead. Eventually the limp went away. The second one just started limping about 10 days ago(they are now 1 year old). She looked bad and wouldn't move at all. I isolated her in a small crate with food and water and let her out a little each day to exercise and to see how the leg was doing. Now she has a slight limp but gets around fine. I expect she'll recover. I too could find no visible sign of injury. I don't know if this helps, but sometimes just knowing someone else has had a similar problem is reassuring. Good luck.
