I'm new to the list and just discovered this may be the better place to post this topic. I posted under the same subject in the poultry management discussion before discovering this one on health health. Any advise?
Hi Steve
Thanks Bill.
A member of my laying flock recently suffered a prolapsed oviduct (if I have the anatomy right). The first time I was able to clean her with warm water and reinsert the protrusion with medicated vasoline. She was alone for a few days and resumed laying. I'm not surprised that it has occured again. This time repair is not as simple though. Any advise other than dispatching her? If she survives is there any way to discourage her laying to give her time to heal.
I also have read about various types of stress that can cause this. Are there other causes I could remedy. After years of raising poultry this is the first injury of this sort.

I,ve never had this problem. The info I'm passing on comes from The Chicken Health Handbook. Possible causes:laying at to young an age,too fat or eggs are too large. Nutritional deficiency of calcium/phosphorus.
Caught in time, the prolapse can be reversed by applying hemorroidal cream (such as Preparation H) and isolating the hen until she improves.
I hope this helps. I dont like just quoting from a book but its the best can for you.
