I just caught one of my young chicks (barred rock) eating its poopy. I'm a new chick owner. Is this behavior normal? I'm concerned.

It sure is. Little guys or gals eat or pick at any thing they find. I remember mine would pick at it and then shake thier little heads and do it again. A little exposior to the poop helps build imunity to protozoa that live in the poop and intestines of the birds. Are you using medicated feed? It would keep them from getting to high of a concentration of protizoa (cocci) in them. If they'er eating thier starter ration I wouldn't worry to much.
