Crud stuck in hen's nose

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Health: Crud stuck in hen's nose

I have 1yr old Golden Comet hen.
The problem is, that she has some crud stuck in her nostrils.
It doesn't seem to really be bothering her at this time.
It's not phlegm or mucus.
It's just some dirt that seems to be stuck in there.
My question is:
Should I just leave it alone, and hope it doesn't become a problem?
or
Should I try to get it out?
If so, how would I go about it without hurting her or making things worse.

I realy don't know. If its just dirt you might try rinsing it with steril water or saline. Be careful not to force it deeper in. I wounder if there is mucus underneath that caused the dirt to stick? Always something isn't it. Thats the best idea I have. Someone else might have a better suggestion. Good luck!

Has the crud been there for a long time? I mean, I see dirt on my chickens' "noses" all the time from scratching around and pecking for bugs. But it doesn't stay there for long.

I think I'd keep an eye on it for a day or two before I attempted to do anything. It very well just might be a dirty beak.(?) Does she seem to be breathing okay....meaning she isn't breathing through her mouth?

I was just thinking....rather than flush it or trying to pick it off of there, I think I would hold her and just squeeze some water over her beak and then let her shake her head and sneeze, as she probably will, and see if that is all it takes.
