Does Lime affect chickens eggs or them? If not I'm goin to try to put it down in their pen so that they don't stink as much. Thanks

Use ground limestone, or, ag lime. They will eat some too. It is ok as it is an ingredient in many feeds. I usually sprinkle a shovel ful on the wood chip bedding and they mix it in.

Jessman, Your pen should not stink! Do you use a bedding that stays DRY. The droppings boards are the only thing that will smell in my coops and I dump the trays under the roost often enough to keep odor down. Then there is NO smell. I use cedar shavings, they stay dry, smell nice when fresh, and I add some new ones now and then between cleanings. And almost no flies in summer. And, of course, the bedding and droppings go on a compost pile for a great garden additive--I never have enough! CJR

I have a dropping board / pit under my roosts about two inches deep covered with welded wire to keep the birds out. I clean the board every week to two weeks and sprinkle hydrated lime over the droppings between cleanings to keep the odor down. Hope this helps. Like CJR I use wood shavings (pine) on the floor and there is no odor to speak of. Warren

Can you mix pine shavings purchased for horse stalls with Cedar shavings for ginnipigs (sp?) for the coop? I too have an odor problem (too many cockerels for now).. will the cedar mix help? could I add lime also? or should I just clean once a month till the cockerels are in the freezer..?

Yes, works just fine! But do you get a good price for the guinea pig bedding? We are able to get bales of dry Cedar or Pine Shavings quite reasonably, but we are in an area where logging is still continuing! How long???CJR

Cedar is kinda pricy, that's why I thought of mixing it.. I would have to get it from Wal-Mart as that's the cheapest place... only 3 more weeks!
